And the job search continues. I think I'm beginning my 4th month of actively searching, and I honestly didn't expect it to last this long. And, much to my dismay, I have become desperate. I have given up on the idea of finding the perfect job (or even a semi-decent job) and have resorted to finding anything that can pay the bills (which in all honesty might have to be several jobs since I have so many bills). I thought I might take a minute to share some excerpts from some recent "interviews."
Position: Part-time Office Manager
Thursday afternoon Sean from solar-sky panels (or something like that) called to see if I could interview tomorrow. I told him that I was quite busy Friday and that Monday would work much better for me. (I'm sure you're wondering at this point what exactly i was busy with--- well I had an interview in the morning w/ a temp agency and a job in the afternoon being a maid). Sean responded that they really wanted to interview everyone that week and that my resume really stood out. So, I rearranged my schedule slightly and managed to make it to the interview. The interview was a little unorthodox; in fact it began with the statement "you're really overqualified for this job so what exactly are you looking for." Thanks. Yes, I realize I'm overqualified, but could you please just hire me all the same. Anyways, after a few minutes of discussion, they wanted to see several of my power point presentations from school. So, the rest of the interview was conducted with me sitting in the nice cushy office chair behind the desk while my two interviewers sat on folding chairs behind the desk. They also got into a large discussion about data analysis and whether or not I would be capable of running some data set and making strategies off of it, and they also mentioned that they were hiring for a part-time marketing research position but that perhaps I could take that responsibility over too. (side note- neither of these things were mentioned on the job posting so it was quite a surprise). It ended with them wanting me to review some website and then come back in and have a discussion about where I thought they could take this. And, I could bill them for my time if I chose. What??? I don't understand. You begin the interview by saying I'm over qualified and then you want me to do research? Seriously, can't someone just give me a job?
Position: Dog Walker
Alright, alright. I know what you're thinking. However, I was merely thinking of this job as a way to make a few extra dollars a week so that I could go out to dinner once in awhile if I so chose. Plus, I figured it would be a good way to get over not having a puppy of my own to play with. Anyways, I go into "interview" for the dog-walking position, not really knowing what to expect. the lady gives me an application to fill out, and of course I don't have anything with me so I end up leaving phone numbers and addresses blank and using Kate and Jules as my references. So I hand it back to the lady and she begins asking what it is that I want and my availability and such. She then browses over my application and gets a perplexed look on her face. she then states, "You have a business degree and a masters degree. I don't understand why you're here." Honestly lady, I don't understand why I'm here either, but here I am. I don't even know what I said in response to this question; I was caught so off guard. After this she said she would have her boss call me, and so I left. Needless to say I have not heard back.
I'm sure I'll have more fun interviewing stories to come. Honestly, I wish I had written about these all along b/c I've really had some interesting stories. Maybe I'll see if I can remember some of the better ones.
