Third times a charm...

For those that haven't spoke to me in the last week or so, the apartment I signed 2 weeks ago fell through. Long story... but basically we were screwed over by the Apartment People (and from what I hear this isn't all that uncommon). So, my last two weeks have been spent looking at apartments, and, let me say, I have probably seen every available 3 bedroom in Chicago for under $1800. In fact, we were shown several apartments on several different occasions by competing companies. Most of them were decent, but none of them were to die, or really even as good as the one we lost.

While finding a replacement was proving difficult, we had much better luck finding a new roommate. We met Laurel on Craigslist for a post Hillary made about our original apartment in Roscoe. When that fell through, she decided she liked us enough to live with us anyway (obviously) and join our search. After we spent last Saturday together looking at crappy places with a horrible shower, I realized we were going to get along just fine. The rest of the weekend shaped up little better and by Tuesday I was past the point of caring where we lived.

So, when Laurel fell in love with a place in Lincoln Park/Old Town, I caved in even though it was way too far east. And that, my friends, was apartment #2.

Now while I wasn’t in love with this place, I was ecstatic to be done, plus I’ve always wanted ot live in Old Town. And, so I was disappointed when it too fell through the next day. I think this turn of events also caused Laurel to join our level of frustration. Nevertheless, we continued to look at places.

Last night I finally resorted to calling Gwen from Apartment People again for another showing (I know, I know). However, this was equally disappointing and by the end I was utterly hopeless. We then went and saw one final place that Laurel had somehow set up through the actual owner. Immediately we all agreed to sign on the spot.

Well… we actually only put in an application (yet again). And, the landlord admitted that he was looking for the perfect tenants. But, he called this morning to say we could come sign the lease this evening. He also said that we could pick out colors that we would like the place painted!

So, that is where I’m headed now. However, if this somehow falls through too, then I’m taking it as a sign that I am not supposed to move right now and that I should stay on my sunny porch a little while longer.

well it's no lewis park but alas most places are not. still very nice. i like the deck and the fact that dominicks is just two blocks away. only in chicago would they include that in an apt ad!

Geez Deb, your life sounds oddly like mine. When I FIRST moved into the city like three-four years ago now Apt. Ppl. screwed me like that too. I haven't used a broker since.

Anyway, believe me when I say that I really, really feel your pain regarding the apartment situation. One day, we'll talk about my last couple of months. I hope this third place went through and you're on your way.

Well, if the living situation turns out anything like the hunting situation, then I will most likely want to move. I think it will be a miracle if I don't kill Hillary.

Too bad you weren't talking to Ashley when I needed a place 3 months ago ;-)
